Most women will experience back or pelvic pain during pregnancy but for some these symptoms can become quite severe.

Whether it is sciatica, hip pain, pelvic instability or pubic diastasis, pain can have an effect on daily activities.  Standing, walking and lifting can become very difficult and in severe cases even rolling over in bed can be painful.

There are a number of reasons why the pregnant low back and pelvis is vulnerable.  Firstly the weight gain as the foetus grows puts extra pressure on the ligaments and joints of the pelvis and back.  As part of the weight gain the mothers body starts to change shape which causes a change in posture which can aggravate the problems.  As well as these changes the mother’s body starts to produce a hormone called relaxin.  This hormone causes the ligaments and joints to loosen a little so that the pelvis is able to stretch during childbirth.  A side effect of this hormone is that the ligaments and joints of the pelvis become more vulnerable to strain and inflammation. These symptoms usually improve after delivery of the baby but in some cases the symptoms can be ongoing.

Cranial osteopathy also known as craniosacral osteopathy provides a painless treatment approach to help balance the pelvis so that the strain on the ligaments is reduced.  Treatment often helps alleviates the symptoms and allow the patient to return to normal daily activities.  Patients may need ongoing care during the pregnancy to cope with the changes occurring, and resolution is often soon after birth. Osteopathy is a great option to help pregnant women cope with the changes involved in pregnancy and child birth.
