Osteopathic treatment before and after surgery may aid your recovery.

The effect of osteopathic treatment on postoperative patients has been studied for a variety of surgical procedures, and studies have shown some positive benefits*.

We’ve created a video which explains how we would work with your body to decrease your pain and swelling.

Surgery itself, however minimally invasive, still causes damage that like any other injury needs treatment. If you have had surgery, for example, a hip replacement, knee replacement, shoulder surgery, arthroscopy, or even keyhole surgery, we aim to normalise the strains in your muscles and joints and connective tissue caused by the surgery.

As your body recovers from surgery it may try to compensate for the injury by changing the way you move or rest. Unfortunately this can lead to poor posture and movement habits that may cause further injury. For example if you are walking differently and don’t work to start normalising your gait, then over time you will cause other strains in your body. Our osteopaths can help you throughout the process, from pre-op to post-op, to aid recovery after surgery.

We can build on the guidelines for rehabilitation given by surgeon and treat you regularly post-surgery to achieve the best possible recovery in the shortest possible time.

Our aim will be to relieve lymphatic congestion and help remove the build up of inflammation. We also work to normalise muscle tension and joint position to help avoid any extra inflammaiton being created.

Why Choose an Osteopath?

Osteopaths look at the body in a holistic way and can be an alternative to other manual therapists like chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists. They take a whole body approach and do not just focus on the one part. Osteopaths look at how the body is being influenced biomechanically from other body regions like the head, shoulder, ankle, foot, hip and the lower back as an example. This whole body approach means the osteopath may be able to reduce pain and improve mobility more efficiently. Osteopaths can treat both acute and chronic pain.
